A Poor Man's Consolation

A journey to the kart track, in the language I wrote it and in English.

Ev arkadaşımın bir köpeği bile dürtemeyecek alarmının aksine Stuka sirenini andıran melodi, rüyamın son anını savaş sahnesine çeviriyor ve Ju87’ler bombalarını bırakmadan evvel, telaşla alarmımı kapatmaya çalışıyorum. Saate dikkat kesiliyorum: 06:41.

(1 sene sonrasından not: başına buyrukluk ve hiçbir şey yapmadan durmanın rahatlatıcı zehri.) . Sahi, onca zaman Otis Abi okuyup, dizisinin tüm bölümlerini tekrar tekrar izleyerek İstanbul’a gelip, bir keşiş hayatı yaşamaya ne ara başladım ben. Ha, hatırladım: Kız arkadaşımdan ayrıldığımdan beri… Tek buna bağlamak adil olmaz tabi; gelecek kaygısı, ülkenin ekonomik durumu ve benim fikirlerimin değişkenliği de bu hayat tarzımın kuvvetli bağlayıcı elemanlarından. Neyse…

My roommate's alarm wouldn't rouse a dog. Mine, with its Stuka siren of a tune, turns the last moments of my dream into a battle scene. I scramble to shut it off before the Ju 87s drop their bombs. I look closely at the time: 06:41. As my memory comes back, I remember why I'm awake so early and feel the adrenaline enter my bloodstream. I consider using it as breakfast and sleeping a little longer, but then I remember there won't be any snack service on the long 500T ride, so I decide to get up. The leg of my sweatpants has ridden up far enough to give my left leg gangrene. I pull it down. I need that leg more today than on any ordinary day.

My feet touch the cold floor. I guess my roommate decided to turn off the boiler. I find myself in a fierce struggle to turn my slipper the right way up, concede defeat, and bend down to fix it with my hand. When I open my bedroom door, the house's distinctive smell hits harder than the adrenaline and damages my temporal lobe. I flee to the sink and wash my face. My beard has grown, so I check the electric razor's charge, swear at the blinking red light, and use the towel someone has already left wet to spread an even coat of dampness across my face. A glance into the kitchen makes my heart sink. I open the cupboard of spoiled food, otherwise known as our refrigerator. Last night's pasta with tomato paste looks perfectly fresh and delicious, but I decide it isn't suitable for the activity I'll be doing in two or three hours. I'll save that feast for dinner. I can't find the motivation to go to the corner shop for bread, and I'm annoyed with myself. I could have slept longer. Why do I always get up so early? Then again, if I don't arrive early, I won't have the track to myself and won't get the session I've been imagining. I stop thinking, gather my gear, and set off. I haven't changed clothes because I took care of that last night. I walk quickly, eyeing the neighborhood bakery with great hope despite knowing it hasn't opened. Closed. “As if this were Europe, ******,” I mutter, and head for the bus stop. With my suit bag in my right hand and my helmet in my left, I tell myself this walk might count as a warm-up. I turn the corner of one of Istanbul's longest heaps of concrete and check the stop two hundred metres away for the 500T. Nothing in sight; no need to run. I stroll to the stop and gaze at the highway, which has become an appliance store. The occasional red Arçelik refrigerator brightens my eyes a little. Then a 500T appears on the horizon. It pulls in like Optimus Prime. I'm second in the line of three people waiting to board, but I let the older woman behind me go first and step inside to reach my real race. I tap my Istanbulkart and look up to see her climbing into the last empty seat. Oh well. It'll be exercise. I'm a young man, after all. I take up position in the corner where the metal handrails stand perpendicular to the window and put my beloved helmet and suit bag on the floor. I wedge the helmet against the side with my foot so it won't roll away. Once that thing starts rolling, though, there's no stopping it.

As the 500T takes the road to the bridge, I watch Istanbul. There isn't much left to watch, but as a civil engineering student I let my eyes follow the curves of the new skyscrapers. They remind me of Italian cars from the seventies.

I've collected so many memories in this city. When I return to my “hometown” in a year, what will I miss most? (A note from a year later: the freedom to do as I please, and the soothing poison of standing still and doing nothing.) When did I come to Istanbul after reading so much Otis Abi and rewatching every episode of the show, only to start living like a monk? Oh, I remember: after I broke up with my girlfriend. It wouldn't be fair to put it all on that, of course. Worry about the future, the state of the country's economy, and the way my own ideas keep changing are also strong binding agents in this way of life. Anyway...

Where does the 500T get its name? How do they name city bus routes? Just as these questions start passing through my mind, I notice we're approaching the Kavacık stop. I check whether some poor soul has to go to school on a Sunday morning, but I see no movement and keep thinking. The T must stand for Tuzla, but why 500? It can't stop at 500 stops, travel 500 kilometres, or carry 500 people (though the driver seems to disagree). Then I notice the person just behind me begin to move, and I get excited. I turn around and see him trying to pull his bag out of that narrow space. Immediately I pick up my bag and helmet and wait impatiently, like a footballer on the touchline waiting for his teammate to come off before a substitution. He squeezes past me on the left. I wait for the person next to him to move over to the window, but that never happens. Without touching the pair of legs that have shifted slightly to the right, I stretch my leg out, deftly pass the bag and helmet from my right hand to my left, and settle into my seat. The damned seat acts as if it wants to punish me for every sin I've committed so far. I squeeze my suit bag into a space too small even for my foot, set the helmet on my lap, and resume my tour of the appliance store. Who the **** lives in these waterfront mansions? To preserve my sanity, I disappear into Livaneli's novel. Could Maximilian Wagner be a spy?

We reach the İçmeler stop I've been waiting for. Maximilian Wagner is lying in a sickbed. I proudly lift my helmet and suit bag and descend from the bus like a noble horse. Traffic is already thickening, and the minibuses are playing their melodic horns. After filling my young lungs with carbon monoxide, I climb the stairs and walk toward the stop for the next bus, the one that will take me to my amusement park. I wait at a pedestrian crossing. The moment I put a foot forward, a horn sounds. As I wait for this migration of white goods, fresh out of the Serengeti, to come to an end, I see my bus approaching and cross with the agility of an antelope. On the slowly moving minibus, the rhythm of my life slows too. I put my things down calmly and watch the neighborhood go by.

Before long I reach my stop, descend through a long underpass, and arrive at the track. I greet the mechanics and walk quickly to the garage where I'll change. Inside, I study the go-karts. They look like bulls ready to throw their riders at the slightest mistake. Before I have time to ask whether all that travel and trouble was for this, I'm pushing one out of the garage. I climb in, pull on the gloves I've tucked into my pocket, and start it.

It doesn't take long to fire. The buzz of that two-stroke Rotax engine sends adrenaline through my veins again. I press the pedal under my right foot and feel the rush of air against my eyes. I close the visor. Behind it, the sound of my quickening breath gives the moment a heroic air. Approaching the pit exit, I look right. The track is empty, and I have enough fuel and adrenaline for an hour of driving. This is what all the trouble was for...

Still, I have to take it easy. This bull is keen to throw me. With cold brakes and tires, I lock the rear axle even at the first corner. I feel my adrenal glands open the valve and switch into tire-warming mode. Right, left, right, left. The emptiness in my stomach feels strange, but I add hard bursts of throttle and brake to the weaving. Approaching the last corner of the first lap, I position the kart carefully and carry as much speed as I can onto the main straight. I try to remember my braking points. I should have done that on the 500T. Ah, well. The tires are still cold, so there's no need to push. I get through this lap with early braking and measured throttle, preparing for the next one. I cross the finish line. I move my foot toward the brake but hesitate to press it, and give the steering wheel a gentle input. To my surprise, the kart turns. Halfway through the double-apex first corner, I get on the throttle and feel the chassis flex, giving the tires the largest possible contact patch. If only that dip at the second apex weren't there... After a violent jolt, I let the kart run wide to the left and set up for the next corner. I lean on the brakes and aim its nose at the apex. Two g of lateral acceleration fling my neck toward the outside of the turn, and I twist my head farther right to bring my vision into focus. I hit the apex, then keep rotating the kart for the next right-left combination with measured throttle. My impatient right foot forces me to make two corrections to get through, and at the exit my rear right tire clips some grass. The rev counter climbs from 6,000 to 8,000 rpm, leaving my neck ten metres behind. With a light touch of the brake, I load the nose, catch up with my neck, and turn left. I miss the apex by about as much as the 2008 crisis missed us, while progressively adding throttle and staying left without drifting wide. Another braking zone for the hairpin ahead. I trail brake all the way to the apex, then open the throttle. I clip the curb through the left-hander, taking as short a line as possible, and lift for the right that follows, trying to get the nose to turn. A little understeer makes me miss the apex by half a metre. I delay the throttle and teleport into the next hairpin. While setting up for a late apex, I lock the rear axle and have to turn in even later than planned. No matter. You can forgive the first lap its sins. With a sharp input I complete about 100 to 110 degrees of the 180-degree turn, then finish the rotation on the throttle. The short straight ahead gives me a moment's rest, but a 2.2 g left-hander and the track's final corner are already on my mind. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I brake to load the front tires and add steering in step with the brake pedal, gradually releasing the brake as I increase the steering angle. I ride over the curb without thinking. The kart bounces a little, but it's fine. I set it up on the left for the final corner, throw a left hook to turn it in, and then comes a symphony that lasts all the way to 12,000 rpm.

And that makes all of it worth it.
